The Student Enrichment Fund is designed to allow Carolina students to take advantage of outside opportunities and bring that learning back to campus. Students will apply for grant money to travel to conferences, museums, performances, or development workshops; we encourage applicants to be creative! They will then be required to complete a reflection and find a simple, succinct way to bring this learning back to campus. Applications will be due on the first of each month and disbursed on a rolling basis throughout the year. We are excited about this opportunity to further enrich Carolina’s vibrant campus and encourage you to visit the SEF site for more information.

USERV Weekly Report for the week of 3/25/12

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to do our Homeless Swipe Day this year, due to a lack of communication and compromise with Carolina Dining Services. Our hope is that the next committee can continue to work with CDS to do this day at the end of the fall 2012 semester.

We have been attempting to get in touch with the Mediterranean Deli manager and/or owner. We will continue to contact Med Deli this week. Since the year is rapidly coming to a close we are trying to establish a relationship with Med Deli in terms of expanding flex to Franklin St. so that the new USERV committee can continue to work on this long project and attempt to come up with a plan with CDS.

A committee member has proposed working with Campus Health to establish free STD and HIV testing for all students. Currently free HIV and STD testing is only given to those with the campus health insurance plan. This is also a long process because the main question that this entails is who is going to pay for the tests. Also, is it going to be readily utilized. However, this is another great project for the next committee to look into. We have spoken with campus health to get a sense of where everything stands, and their main concerns are the ones I just stated. Also, we have talked to student congress members and it is a supported issue; however, again it is the question of whether or not the funding will come from student fees, will there be an “opt in” option, etc.

RealTalk– we are currently working on soliciting monologues and actor submissions, and will be reaching out to community governments, and sending out notifications through Facebook. Auditions will be on March 29 from 6-10pm.

Amendment One– we have decided to push back the forum date to later in April so we can create a more coordinated publicity push, and also schedule our panelists to created the most information educational forum possible.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday at 4pm in the Student Government suite.

The Student Enrichment Fund is seeking dedicated and passionate students to comprise leadership and committee positions for the 2012-2013 school year. We welcome anyone interested in serving as Director, Fundraising Chair, Public Relations Chair, and Treasurer. We are also seeking a diverse set of students to comprise the associated fundraising and PR committees, in addition to the selection committee that will read applications and allocate funding. Applications for the four leadership positions are due (Wednesday Mar 26), and applications for committee positions are due (April 6). Completed applications should be sent to mary.aa.cooper@gmail.com. If you are interested, please see the descriptions of these positions below.

Please click here to download the application: SEF Leadership Application

Director

The director must have some sort of prior involvement with the SEF (not including receiving a grant). The director will oversee every aspect of the SEF. He/she will chair the selection committee and ensure the future sustainability and growth of the SEF. The director will also be involved with many “macro” aspects of the SEF, working closely with campus leaders of similar organizations and the SEF advisory board to guide the SEF towards long-term success.

Treasurer

The treasurer will manage all the financial aspects of the SEF. He/she will work closely with the Student Activities Fund Office and guide the selection committee through the decision-making process. Furthermore, the treasurer will manage financial information about past grantees.

Fundraising

The fundraising chair will head the fundraising committee, whose responsibility is to ensure the financial growth and sustainability of the fund. Potential projects include reaching out to academic departments, corporate sponsors (i.e. business on Franklin St), and student government and UNC alumni. The fundraising committee will be working closely with the Union and Office of University Development in these efforts.

Public Relations

The PR chair will head the PR committee, whose primary goal is to promote awareness of the SEF that is crucial to its success. The PR chair and committee will be tasked with planning SEF events like pit-sit days and scholar receptions, contacting student organizations to inform members of SEF opportunities, publicizing for application deadlines, and writing press releases to the DTH. Extensive hands-on and social media use is expected in these outreach efforts.

Selection Committee

The selection committee decides to whom SEF grants will be awarded and how funding will be allocated. Members will read applications at the end of each month and meet monthly to discuss how grants should be awarded. Selection committee members will also mentor recipients of grants in the Bring it Back component of the SEF to ensure that their enrichment experience is brought back to Carolina to positively impact other students.

This week we attended a meeting with Chancellor Holden Thorp, along with Mary Cooper and representatives from Sierra Student Coalition, and RESPC. During this meeting we discussed the Green Revolving Loan Fund, the pilot Bike Share Program and a forum about the endowment. The Chancellor was supportive of the idea to hold an educational forum about the University’s endowment and we will therefore continue to work on planning this forum in an effort to teach students what the endowment is and how it functions. The forum will most likely be planned for the fall.

We are also continuing to work on planning events for Earth Week and Campus Earth Day. Members will be reaching out to student groups and various campus departments to plan a variety of events.
